Advise.ly is a peer-to-peer network for on demand career advice.
We believe there is untapped value in enabling people to connect around career questions at the point of need. Advise.ly connects to our users’ LinkedIn accounts to learn about their career history, skills and expertise, education and industry. Based on the proximity of this data, we are able to intelligently match people by analyzing common characteristics that would cause them to have a productive conversation. Matches are then able to initiate a phone call to talk about career advice, interview questions and the like.
Our goal is to create a community of people who understand the value in sharing perspectives on their careers with those who are excited and willing to listen. Sometimes it’s easy to forget how valuable 5 minutes and a new perspective can be on something we experience everyday: our careers.
Advise.ly is the brainchild of Andrew Look, Parth Shah, Nathanael Smith, Uzair Ali and John Milinovich. After observing the economy that exists in the advice that we give and receive everyday, we sought to create a platform that lowers the barrier in finding the right people to help us through our career questions.
Advise.ly was built in 24 hours at the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon in San Francisco on September 8 and 9, 2012 by a team fueled by too much caffeine, too little sleep and a sense of urgency to one-up themselves.
